Strategy and trickery led to Martin Truex Jr winning again at Sonoma. Crew chief Cole Pearn called Truex to pit road on lap 73. Kevin Harvick’s crew decided to follow suit, but Truex’s stop was called off at the last second. He took over the lead and built it up to more than 20 seconds while using the alternate pit strategy in the first road course race of the year. It’s Truex’s second win at Sonoma and third road course win of his career. Harvick settled for second and Stewart Haas Racing teammate Clint Bowyer was third. Chase Elliott finished fourth, his best ever result on a road course.
